by Dirk Hillerkus

The Boshe Ilgira Integrated Rural Development Project (BIIRDP) is one of the 30 projects of the Development and Social Service Commission DASSC) in 19 Synods and 1 Area Work through out the country. These projects altogether address a total target population of 1,181.064. BIIRDP is one of the projects in the South Central Synod (SCS), founded in 1969 and located in Hosanna town. BIIRDP itself has got two project sites, one in Kembata and one in Hadiya, serving 76,573 people.

Main projects of the SCS include 2 pre-schools, 3 hostels, 2 health institutions with family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention program, 10 literacy centers (non-formal education) and three Integrated Rural Development Projects (Boshe Ilgira, Butajira, and Gombora Amacho). Central activities of the BIIRDP are animal and plant husbandry, aforestation, water development,  nutrition & hygiene, gender issues.

Major problems of the target community as identified were:

  • Lack of potable water

  • Lack of agricultural inputs: Plough oxen credit

  • Low productivity: Due to soil erosion

  • Lack of diversity of crops (fruits, vegetables)

  • Lack of improved breeds, shortage of animal feed
