The Boshe Ilgira Integrated Rural Development Project (BIIRDP) is one of
the 30 projects of the Development and Social Service Commission DASSC)
in 19 Synods and 1 Area Work through out the country. These projects
altogether
address
a total
target population of 1,181.064. BIIRDP is one of the projects in the
South Central Synod (SCS),
founded in 1969
and located in
Hosanna town.
BIIRDP
itself has got
two project sites, one in Kembata and one in Hadiya, serving 76,573
people.

Main projects of
the
SCS
include 2 pre-schools, 3 hostels, 2 health institutions with family
planning, HIV/AIDS prevention program, 10 literacy centers (non-formal
education) and three
Integrated Rural Development Projects (Boshe Ilgira, Butajira, and
Gombora Amacho). Central activities of the BIIRDP are animal and plant
husbandry, aforestation, water development, nutrition & hygiene, gender
issues.

Major
problems of the target community as identified were:

Lack of potable water

Lack of agricultural inputs: Plough oxen credit

Low productivity: Due to soil erosion
-
Lack of diversity of crops (fruits, vegetables)
-
Lack of improved breeds, shortage of animal feed
-
Lack of infrastructure: Bridge, health facilities, school

Lack of access to cash credit: Especially for women
-
Harmful traditions:
Suffering from FGM, fistula problem, early marriage, frequent
pregnancies

The people in the project areas were confronted with a vicious circle,
where the population pressure stood in the centre, surrounded by
depletion of natural resource base, reduced agricultural productivity,
food insecurity and poverty, insufficient farm income opportunities and
inadequate productive assets.

In order to meet the aforementioned problems, the BIIRDP set the
